Starting either yesterday or today, depending on where you live, is Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the Ramadan fast.
It's that time again - the Islamic month of Ramadan. It lasts from September 13 to October 12 this year. Ramadan is a month when Muslims refrain from food, drink, sex, and any kind of bad conduct from dawn to sunset each day.
Islamic months start at sunset when the new crescent moon is first seen, which is tonight, but the fast itself begins tomorrow morning.
May all Muslims observing this month have a blessed Ramadan and may your fasting and prayers be accepted by God.
Here are a couple of videos for the spirit of the season.
Today is Eid al-Fitr, the festival to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Eid mubarak (blessed Eid) to all! Above are two Eid songs I found on YouTube to enjoy today.
Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting. During Ramadan, observent Muslims fast from dawn to sunset each day. The Islamic calendar is lunar, with each month starting at the sighting of the new crescent moon. This year, Ramadan is from September 23 to October 23, so the fasting starts tomorrow at dawn for me.
The phrase "Ramadan mubarak" means, roughly "Have a blessed Ramadan" and is a traditional greeting of Muslims to each other during the month.
I love Ramadan. The fasting seems like it might be very difficult, but once I get into the routine of it, I don't find it so (though usually I hit a little "wall" about 20 days in). I really enjoy Ramadan. The discipline needed to complete the fast is good for me, and the special month motivates me to do extra.
Besides fasting from food and drink, Muslims should also refrain from bad conduct and language. This (especially the bad language!) is sometimes more challenging than just refraining from food and drink. But it's good for me!
P.S. Kelev T. Cat's moon series has been fun, watching the moon wane and then disappear, knowing that it measures the time until the start of Ramadan.
